Nic Salts Explained: Strengths, Devices And Buying In Bulk

Nic Salts Explained: Strengths, Devices And Buying In Bulk

Walk into any UK vape shop now and most of the shelf is 10ml bottles. Five years ago it was tanks and big bottles. The thing that changed it is a word most customers cannot explain, and plenty of shop staff cannot either.

This guide covers what a nic salt is and which strength suits who. It also covers the right device for it, and what a shop should weigh up before ordering a pallet.

So What Is A Nic Salt?

The word salt confuses everybody, so start there. It has nothing to do with table salt. Nothing in the bottle tastes salty.

In chemistry, a salt is what you get when an acid meets something else. That is the whole of it.

Makers take ordinary nicotine and add a mild acid, usually benzoic acid. [documented: several UK sellers, including Grey Haze and e-liquids.com] That does two things:

It softens the hit. The liquid turns less harsh in the throat, so a strong bottle stops feeling like sandpaper.

It works faster. The nicotine reaches the body quicker, closer to how a cigarette felt.

Benzoic acid is not exotic. It occurs in fruit and is used across the food trade as a preservative.

Put simply, a nic salt is ordinary liquid that has been made gentler so it can carry more nicotine without hurting.

Nic Salt Against Ordinary Liquid

The older sort is called freebase. Same nicotine, no acid added, and it gets rough as the strength climbs.

Side by side:

Nic salt Freebase
Throat at 20mg Smooth Rough for most people
Speed Quick Slower
Usual strength 10mg and 20mg 3mg and 6mg
Device Small pod kits Bigger kits and tanks
Bottle 10ml, ready to use Often a big bottle plus a shot

Neither one is better. They are built for different devices and different people, and a shop needs both on the shelf.

The big bottle route is a separate thing again, covered in a shortfill and a nic shot if a customer asks for it.

10mg Or 20mg: Picking A Strength

UK law caps nicotine at 20mg in a 10ml bottle. Above that is not legal here, so the choice is narrower than people expect.

In practice most bottles are one of two:

20mg
For somebody who has just stopped smoking, or who has come off a bar. It is the closest match to what they had.
10mg
For a vaper who has settled in. The top strength has begun to bite and they would rather taper than quit the flavour.

One thing worth telling a customer. 20mg and 2% mean exactly the same thing. Different brands print it differently, and people think they are two products.

10mg or 20mg Picking a Strength

Some ranges skip 10mg entirely. That pushes anybody tapering off towards a rival brand, and they rarely come back once they have found one they like. Ranges carrying both strengths hold on to that person.

The Devices Nic Salts Belong In

This is where most complaints come from, and it is the easiest thing to get right.

A quick check at the counter:

Pocket-sized, narrow pull, cigarette-like
Salt is made for this. 20mg is comfortable.

Chunky device, open airy pull, thick vapour
Keep salt away. 20mg in one of these is rough going.

The reason is simple. A big device turns far more liquid into vapour with every puff, so the same 20mg arrives in a much bigger dose. That is what makes somebody cough, feel dizzy, and decide vaping is not for them.

The Devices Nic Salts Belong In

There is a catch that even experienced staff miss. Some devices look small but are not. The SMOK Vape Pen 22 is a slim metal tube, yet its coil runs at 0.3 ohm, which is firmly in big-device territory. Put a 20mg salt in that and the customer will not enjoy it.

If the number on the coil is under about 0.8 ohm, treat the device as big regardless of its size. what a coil actually does explains the numbers properly.

Where Bar Flavours Went After The Ban

June 2025 closed the door on throwaway vapes in British shops. [documented: gov.uk, single-use vapes ban guidance] Most people assumed the flavours would disappear alongside them.

They did not. They moved into bottles.

Look at what the brands did next:

Elux sold the Legend bar  →  Elux Legend salts, twenty-six flavours
Elux sold the Firerose bar  →  Firerose salts, twelve flavours
Lost Mary sold the BM600  →  Maryliq salts
IVG sold bars  →  IVG salts
SKE sold the Crystal Bar  →  Crystal Clear salts

Same companies, same flavour names, different container. A customer who liked Blue Razz in a bar can have Blue Razz in a bottle.

The Legend move was the biggest of them. Elux Legend, twenty-six flavours is the widest bar-to-bottle list we carry, and it outsells everything else on our salt shelf.

That matters more than it sounds for a shop. You are not persuading anybody to try a new taste. You are handing them the one they already had, in a form that costs them less and is legal to sell.

It also explains why the salt shelf grew so fast. It did not grow because vapers suddenly wanted bottles. It grew because the bar shelf disappeared.

Reading A Nic Salt Label

Four things on the bottle actually matter. The rest is decoration.

10ml The legal maximum for a nicotine bottle in the UK. Anything bigger has no nicotine in it.
20mg or 2% Same number said two ways. The legal ceiling.
50/50 The mix inside. Half and half is thin enough for small pod kits.
Nic salt Says which sort of nicotine. If it does not say salt, assume freebase.

One more that is easy to miss. A bottle that says 70/30 is thicker and meant for bigger devices, so it rarely belongs beside the salts.

What A 10ml Bottle Really Costs A Vaper

This is the sum that moves stock, and it is worth your staff having it ready.

Listings put a 10ml bottle at about 3,000 puffs. The small bars people used to buy held roughly 600.

One bottle about five bars

And it costs a fraction of five bars every time

Those puff figures come from seller listings, not from anything we have timed ourselves. What somebody actually gets depends on their kit and their habits.

Even so, the direction is not in doubt. The bottle is the cheaper habit, and that is the argument that turns a bar customer into a bottle customer.

The trade price makes the same point. the Crystal Clear box of 10 works out near a pound a bottle, and one bottle replaces roughly five bars a customer used to buy one at a time.

Stocking Wholesale Nic Salts In A Shop

Now the trade side. Wholesale nic salts behave differently from hardware, and the differences are all in your favour.

•   They repeat. Hardware is a one-off. A bottle comes round again every week or two for as long as that person keeps vaping.

•   They take no room. A whole trade box sits in one hand, so buying deep costs you no shelf at all.

•   Nothing goes flat. There is no cell inside to weaken, so months in the back room change nothing.

•   The names sell themselves. Elux, IVG, Elf Bar and SKE are already known from the bars.

Elf Bar is the name most customers say out loud, and Elf Bar Elfliq salts is that brand in a bottle. Worth having on a first order for that reason alone.

Most wholesale nic salts come as a box of 10, one flavour and one strength per box. Four flavours on display means four boxes ordered, which catches people out on their first sheet.

A first shelf that works for most shops:

Boxes What
2 Berry, the biggest seller in nearly every range
1 Mint or menthol
1 A sweet or gum flavour
1 Something cold and fruity

Start on 20mg across all of them, then add 10mg on whichever flavours prove themselves. You can see the whole shelf in our nic salt collection.

Bulk Nic Salts Without Dead Stock

Buying deep on bottles is safer than buying deep on devices, for one reason: nothing inside is ageing.

Hardware carries a cell inside, and a cell weakens quietly while it waits in a box. Bulk nic salts have no clock running. Sealed liquid simply sits there.

Two things do go wrong with a bulk nic salts order, though, and both are avoidable:

Too many of one taste. Some ranges stack up on a single flavour family. One we stock has seven cherries out of thirty-four. Two on a shelf is plenty.

A gap nobody noticed. Firerose salts, twelve flavours has no mint in it anywhere. A fine range, but not as a shop's only salt brand.

Count the flavour list before you order, not after. Group it by taste and the holes show up immediately.

What October 2026 Does To Every Bottle

A new duty of £2.20 per 10ml arrives on 1 October 2026, and it applies to every nicotine liquid sold here. [documented: gov.uk, Vaping Products Duty guidance]

Because the bottle is exactly 10ml, the full charge lands on each one:

£2.20   on each 10ml bottle
£22.00   on a trade box of ten
VAT is charged on top of both

Most salt boxes cost a shop somewhere between £10 and £15 today. The tax is more than the box.

No other product takes the tax this badly. On a prefilled device you are at least paying for a battery and a body alongside the liquid. On a bottle there is nothing else in the price.

Anything that landed here before the change, with no stamp on it, stays sellable up to 31 March 2027 and no longer. the duty landing in October sets out every date and who needs to register.

Mistakes Shops Make With Nic Salts

Five that come up again and again, all of them cheap to avoid.

1. Selling salt for a big device. The most common one. Check the coil number before the sale, not after the complaint.

2. Stocking only 20mg. Anyone tapering has to buy their bottle from whoever does carry 10mg, and the rest of their basket follows.

3. Assuming every range covers every taste. Count the list. Gaps are common and mint is the one most often missing.

4. Selling a bottle with no kit. Somebody off a bar has nothing to pour it into. Ask before they leave.

5. Not warning about a fresh pod. A new pod needs a minute to soak. Rush it and the taste is burnt, and the customer blames your liquid.

None of those is a knowledge problem. They are all counter habits, and a shop that fixes them keeps customers the rest of the street loses.

Things Shops Ask Us About Salts

Is there actual salt in a nic salt?

No. The word describes the chemistry, not the taste. Nothing in the bottle is salty.

Can somebody use a nic salt in any vape?

No. Small pod kits with a tight draw only. A big cloud device makes 20mg far too strong.

What is the difference between 20mg and 2%?

Nothing at all. Same figure, printed two ways by different brands.

How long does one 10ml bottle last?

Listings tend to say around 3,000 puffs, which works out near five of the small bars. A heavy vaper empties it sooner.

Are nic salts stronger than ordinary liquid?

Not at the same number. A 10mg salt and a 10mg freebase hold the same nicotine. The salt feels smoother and works quicker.

Why does everything come as a box of 10?

That is the standard trade unit for bottles. One flavour and one strength per box, so plan the sheet by flavour.

Do bottles go off in the stockroom?

Not in the way hardware does. Sealed liquid keeps, which is why bulk nic salts are a safer deep buy than kits.

Will the October duty really double the price?

On a 10ml bottle it is close to it. £2.20 a bottle, £22 a box, before VAT.

Which brands should a new shop start with?

The ones customers already know from the bars. Elux, IVG, Elf Bar and SKE all moved their bar flavours into bottles.

What sells fastest on a salt shelf?

Berry, in nearly every range we hold. Mint second, and it is the one most often missing from a list.
