Vape Coils Explained: Ohms, Mesh, Pod Coils And When To Change Them

Every refillable vape has a small part that does the real work. It turns liquid into vapour. When it wears out, the taste goes, and most people blame the liquid or the device first.
That part is the coil. This guide explains what vape coils are, how to pick the right one, and when to change it.
What Are Vape Coils?
Think of it as a tiny heater with three layers, one inside the next.
Liquid soaks in from the tank or pod
Cotton holds the liquid
When you press the button or breathe in, the battery sends power to the metal. The metal gets hot. The liquid in the cotton around it turns to vapour, and you breathe that in. Then more liquid soaks into the cotton, ready for the next puff.
That is the whole job. The cotton slowly wears out, which is why vape coils need replacing. You keep the vape and swap just this small part. Our coil collection shows how many kinds there are.
Why Is It Called An Atomiser?
You will see the same part called different names. They all mean the same thing.
"Atomiser" comes from the idea of breaking liquid into tiny drops. Some people shorten it to "atty". Shops and makers mix these words all the time, so do not worry if a box says one and a website says another. It is the same part.
What Does Coil Resistance Mean?
Each one has a number with "ohm" or the symbol Ω after it, like 0.3Ω or 1.2Ω. That is its resistance. You do not need the maths. Just remember this: a lower number means more heat, more vapour and more liquid used. A higher number means a gentler, tighter puff that uses less.
Here is where some of our stock sits on that scale.
UK sellers roughly split the scale like this. Below about 0.6Ω is sub-ohm: big clouds, breathing straight into your lungs, and thick liquid. From about 0.8Ω up is mouth-to-lung: a tighter pull, more like a cigarette, and the usual home for nic salts. One seller calls 1.0Ω to 1.2Ω the sweet spot for most mouth-to-lung setups.

Most also print a wattage range on the side. Stay inside it. Too much power burns the cotton. Too little gives weak, thin vapour. For a tight, low-power setup, Aspire BVC coils at 1.6Ω and 1.8Ω are a common example.
Is Mesh Better Than Wire?
There are two main kinds of heating metal.
Mesh: a flat strip of metal with tiny holes. It heats a bigger area evenly. Sellers say it gives fuller flavour and fewer dry hits, and that it is now the standard in most newer kits.
Wire: a thin metal wire wound into a spiral. The older design. Still common in simple pens and cheaper tanks, and still does a good job.
So is mesh better? For most people, yes, if your tank or pod offers it. Some sellers say mesh lasts a little longer too, though others say the difference is small in real use. If your device only takes wire coils, that is fine. It will still vape well.
Do Pod Coils Need Changing?
Yes, but how you change them depends on the pod. Follow the path.
Many small pod vapes, like the Vaporesso Xros and Aspire Gotek, have the coil built into the pod. Others take separate pod coils that push into the pod, which can work out cheaper because only the coil is thrown away. Freemax Maxpod coils at 1.0Ω and 1.5Ω are one example of pod coils sold on their own.

Sealed prefilled pods are different again. The coil and liquid come together, so the whole pod is replaced when it runs out.
Will Any Coil Fit My Vape?
No. This is the mistake people make most. Coils are made for one family of tanks or pods, and they only fit that family.
Two can look almost the same and still not fit. Even within one brand, one made for one tank may not fit another. The safest check is the name on the tank or pod, matched to the name on the coil box.
Brand coils are usually grouped by maker. For example, Vaporesso coils cover the GT and EUC families, and Voopoo, SMOK and Freemax coils each fit their own tanks and pods.
How Do I Know A Coil Is Burnt?
Your vape usually tells you. Here is what to look for.
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
| Harsh, burnt taste | Cotton has dried and scorched | Change the coil. A burnt coil cannot be saved. |
| Flavour fading | Coil is gunked up | Change it soon |
| Less vapour than before | Coil wearing out | Change it soon |
| Gurgling or spitting | Too much liquid in the coil | Take softer puffs, or check the coil is seated |
| Burnt taste on a brand new coil | Not primed, or power too high | See the priming tip below |
A burnt taste is the one sign you should never vape through. Once cotton has scorched, it stays scorched.
How Often Should You Change A Coil?
There is no single answer, and UK sellers give different ranges. Here is roughly what they say, on one timeline.
Most sellers land on one to two weeks for regular use. One says mouth-to-lung coils often last 7 to 10 days, while sub-ohm coils may need changing every 4 to 7 days. Light users can stretch to three or four weeks.
Your taste is the real guide, not the calendar. When it goes burnt or flat, it is time.
Three Things That Make A Coil Last Longer
Prime it first. Before the first puff, drip a few drops of liquid onto the cotton you can see and fill the tank. Then wait a few minutes so the cotton soaks through. Sellers usually suggest five to ten. Skipping this is the fastest way to burn a new one.
Watch the sweet liquids. One seller explains that the sweetener in dessert and candy flavours sticks to the coil and gunks it faster than fruit or menthol.
Match the liquid to the coil. Thick, high VG liquid suits low-ohm coils. Thinner 50/50 liquid suits high-ohm pod coils, because thick liquid cannot soak into small cotton fast enough.
Can A Coil Cut Your Liquid Bill?
Yes, and from 1 October 2026 it matters more. Coils themselves carry no vape duty, because the duty is charged on liquid. But the coil you choose decides how much liquid you use, and every 10ml now carries the new liquid duty of £2.20.
Example: 5ml a day
35ml a week · £7.70 duty
Example: 2ml a day
14ml a week · £3.08 duty
These are simple examples to show the idea, not a measured result. Duty only, before VAT.
Low ohms and high power burn through liquid quickly. High ohms and low power sip it. So someone who moves to a tighter setup often uses less liquid, and pays less duty on it, without buying a new vape.
How Shops Stock Wholesale Vape Coils
For a shop, these are a repeat sale. A customer who buys a tank today will be back every week or two. Four steps make planning wholesale vape coils easy.
List the tanks and pod kits you sell
Stock the coil family for each one
Carry the common ohm options
Keep them near the kits they fit
The mistake to avoid is buying for devices you do not sell. Each type only fits its own family, so wholesale vape coils for a kit nobody buys from you will sit on the shelf.
Brand ranges help here. SMOK tank coils make up 24 lines in our range, covering the V8, V12, Mini V2 and RPM families.
Planning A Vape Coils Bulk Order
They come in small packs, which makes the maths easy. Here is how the packs on our shelves are usually made up.
A box of 5 coils is a handy unit to think in. If a customer changes weekly, one box of 5 covers them for about five weeks. A vape coils bulk order can then be sized by how many regular customers use each tank.
Two more tips for a vape coils bulk order. Carry more than one resistance for the popular families, because some customers want clouds and some want a tight pull. And order the coil packs alongside any new tank you add, so the first customer who buys the tank can buy coils the same day.
Other Coil Questions
What are vape coils made of?
A metal heating part, either mesh or wire, wrapped in cotton that soaks up the liquid.
What ohm coil should a beginner use?
Most people moving from cigarettes or bars prefer a tighter pull. So about 1.0Ω or above, used with 50/50 or nic salt liquid.
Can I clean a burnt coil?
Not the usual pre-made kind. Once the cotton is scorched, it needs replacing. Only rebuildable ones, which you wrap yourself, can be re-wicked.
Do pod coils fit other pods?
Only pods from the same family. Check the name on the pod against the name on the coil box.
Why does my new coil taste burnt?
Usually it was not primed, or the power is set too high. Let the cotton soak for a few minutes before the first puff.
Is there vape duty on coils?
No. The new duty only applies to liquid. Coils, tanks, empty pods and devices carry none.
How many coils are in a box of 5?
Five of the same type and resistance. Some lines come in packs of 2, 3 or 4 instead.
Which wholesale vape coils should a shop start with?
The ones that fit the tanks and pods the shop already sells, in the popular resistances.
Resistance ranges, coil life and mesh details are drawn from UK vape retailers' published guides and are shown as their views. Duty figures follow HMRC. Pack sizes are from our own listings and can change. Nicotine is addictive and these products are for adults aged 18 and over.
